Dancing on Ice star calls for dangerous move to be 'retired' after near miss

Dancing on Ice star James Jordan has called for the ITV show to ban the headbanger after the dangerous move featured in Molly Pearce's performance last week.

The Traitors star was the latest to leave the competition ahead of tonight's semi-final, going out after giving the dangerous headbanger move a go. Now, 2019 winner James Jordan has given his thoughts on whether Mollie was right to leave the competition - and why the dangerous move should be retired.

In an exclusive chat with The Mirror for Sky Vegas, James said: "Everyone keeps going on about the headbanger like it’s the be-all and end-all of Dancing on Ice, but it just doesn’t look good. Mollie [Pearce] laid on the floor and stuck her leg in the air, and he [Colin Grafton] swung her around - it wasn’t elegant or graceful.

"Honestly, it’s time to retire the headbanger move. It’s outdated. The show needs to come up with something new that looks better." He added that even if the move is done correctly, it looks perilous. "It still looks like they’re going to smash their head into the floor. I get that there’s an element of jeopardy, but you’d expect a professional skater lifting someone to get it right. There’s no real danger - it just doesn’t look good.

“The judges kept focusing on the fact that she did the headbanger instead of saying, 'You were amazing last week, but unfortunately, you didn’t bring your best performance this time, at a crucial stage in the competition’. I think the judges should have scored sevens and eights, and maybe if they had, the viewers at home would’ve wanted to pick up the phone and vote for her.”

Earlier today, The Mirror revealed that Dancing on Ice's upcoming final could be its last as the show faces the axe following low ratings. One source said: “There are very real fears this is the end of the road for Dancing on Ice. It’s had a good run for nearly 20 years and has a very loyal set of viewers who really love it but the sad truth is there’s just not enough of them. We need bums on seats but the ratings have dropped to a point where it’s difficult to justify the cost.”

An ITV spokeswoman told The Mirror: "The Dancing on Ice team is fully concentrating on the much anticipated series finale this coming Sunday and therefore no decision has been made.”
