Come Dine With Me icon opens up about legendary whisk moment

In terms of iconic Come Dine With Me moments, it's pretty hard to beat the endlessly quotable 'What a sad little life Jane" - but amateur chef Kev Riley got pretty close.

Back in the simpler times of 2013, DJ Kev was busily preparing to welcome his Come Dine With Me guests to his Burnley home, little realising that his unusual kitchen methods were about to go down as one of the Channel 4 show's most referenced moments.

Yes, in a move that left viewers gagging and laughing simultaneously, Kev shoved an entire whisk into his mouth while whipping up a cheesecake.

Whether or not the cheesecake proved to be a hit with his fellow foodies, nobody could tell you, with the unconventional use of utensils overshadowing the events of the rest of the evening. Now, more than 10 years on, Kev has looked back on the viral moment, while sharing his plans for what is arguably the world's most famous whisk...

During an appearance on FUBAR Radio's comedy programme Pulse Of The Nation, Kev spoke with host Andrew White about the commotion he whisked up at the time, with the now-famous clip still being shared on social media to this day.

Kev said: “Not many people have watched the entire show, but they just remember it for that one clip. But the three other contestants were all really good cooks, and I was struggling.

"I had a producer who had a bit of a soft spot for me, and she was even chopping up my veg and I was doing it to make her laugh. I just shouted to her and just put the whisk in my mouth and then it was only when I saw the camera crew laughing that I realised it was a moment.”

Despite enjoying some degree of fame in the aftermath of the episode, Kev admitted he hasn't made a tonne of money from his antics. According to Kev: “My wife is constantly reminding me that I don't make any money out of this fame. Maybe it should have been something more expensive I put in my mouth because you can't really brand a whisk. They're about two quid, aren't they?”

He continued: “I'm on the CAMEO app doing the happy birthdays and things like that. There's a modicum amount of money on that, but nothing really. When I spoke to Rob Beckett about it, when I was on his show, he said somebody with that many hits on YouTube, he said over 50 million. I should have at least had a nice car or holiday out of it.”

However, Kev does have plans to sell the original whisk on eBay, meaning fans could soon get their hands on a little piece of Come Dine With Me history. To the delight of listeners, Kev shared: “I’ve got the original one here. I thought that might go for a bit on eBay one day.”
