Derby County have sacked manager Paul Warne just months after he led the club back to the Championship.
Warne, 51, secured Derby's promotion from League One to the Championship in April, after a 2–0 win at home to Carlisle United on the last day of the season. It confirmed Derby would be promoted as runners-up with their highest ever points tally, just two seasons after they dropped out of the Championship while in administration.
However, the East Midlands outfit are currently 22nd in the Championship, two points from safety, after one of the worst losing runs in their 141-year history, as the side contend with mounting injury problems. His last game in charge proved to be a 1-0 defeat at home to Sheffield United.
In a statement this afternoon, the club said: "It is with regret that Derby County have decided to relieve Paul Warne of his position. While Paul and his staff helped deliver on the club’s objective of a return to the Championship last season, the recent run of results necessitates a change."
Owner David Clowes said: "Paul is a man of great integrity and embodies the values we hold important at Derby County. No fan should ever forget his contribution in securing promotion to the Championship. I certainly won’t.
"However, results in football dictate decisions and we felt that to give us the best chance of retaining our Championship status, the time was right to make a change.
"Paul goes with our thanks, gratitude and best wishes. He and his family will always be welcome at Pride Park."
Derby added: "The search for Paul’s replacement is underway and there will be no further comment until the position has been filled."
The former Wigan Athletic, Rotherham United, Oldham Athletic and Yeovil Town midfielder is a League One promotion specialist, having also overseen three promotions as Rotherham United, but each time failed to maintain their status in the Championship, having suffered relegation three times while in charge of the Millers.
