Buckingham Palace has announced the birth of an 'absolutely tiny' baby to add to the Royal Family.

The Palace revealed that Princess Beatrice gave birth to a daughter named Athena, who was born several weeks prematurely on January 22, weighing 4lb 5oz. Beatrice's husband Edoardo Mapelli posted a tribute to his new daughter, calling her "tiny and absolutely perfect". He wrote on Instagram sharing a photograph of Athena wrapped in a blanket: "Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi. We welcomed baby Athena into our lives last week.

"She is tiny and absolutely perfect. We are all (including Wolfie and Sienna) already completely besotted with her.

"Our hearts are overflowing with love for you, baby Athena. A massive thank you from my wife and I goes out to all the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their exceptional care and support during this incredibly special time."

Princess Beatrice's sister Princess Eugenie celebrated the new arrival by posting "Welcome Baby Girl" and sharing Mr Mapelli Mozzi's photograph of baby Athena wrapped in a pink blanket on her Instagram Stories.

Naturally social media became a hive of well wishes and praise for the happy family following the news.

One X user wrote: "Such wonderful news! Congratulations to Princess Beatrice and Edoardo on the arrival of baby Athena wishing their family love and happiness!"

Another said: "Congratulations to HRH Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi on the birth of their daughter Athena, who is now 11th in line for the throne. May God bless them."

A third added: "I am so happy for Princess Beatrice. Athena Elizabeth Rose will be so loved, and will be so much fun to watch in the years to come."
