British citizen confirmed dead among 14 killed in New Orleans terror attack

A British citizen has been confirmed as one of 14 people who were killed after a man drove a truck into crowds in New Orleans.

The identity of the Brit has been temporarily withheld at the request of the family. Officials say this is "pending finalisation of international arrangements".

Their preliminary cause of death was blunt force injuries, according to the city's coroner said. No further information on there age, gender or if they were living in the US, has been made available.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office told Sky News: "We are supporting the family of a British national who has died in New Orleans and are in contact with local authorities."

The incident has left America in shock after people looking to celebrate the New Year with family and friends were targeting.

A truck flaunting the flag of ISIS sped through the crowd of revellers seeing in 2025 on the world famous Bourbon Street.

The car hit dozens of people before driver Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, an ex-US Army veteran, opened fire.

Surveillance footage also recorded Jabbar, 42, planting two explosives in coolers from the cross-section of Bourbon and Orleans Street and the second at the intersection of Bourbon and Toulouse Streets.

FBI special agent bomb technicians recovered both devices and rendered them safe. Jabbar was killed after a gunfight with responding officers.

FBI Deputy Assistant Director Christopher Raia from the Counterterrorism Division at FBI Headquarters spoke to the press on Thursday to share its support for the victims and bring the public up to speed on its investigation.

Raja said "Let us be very clear — what happened here in New Orleans was an act of terrorism. It was premeditated and an evil act.

This investigation is only a little more than 24 hours old, and we have no indication at this point that anyone else was involved in this attack other than Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar.

"The FBI is surging people and assets to this area from across the region and across the nation. Special agents in field offices across the country are assisting with potential aspects of this investigation and following up on leads. Additional teams of special agents, professional staff, and victim specialists continue to arrive to provide more investigative power and assistance to the victims and their families."
