A young British woman has reportedly plummeted to her death in a popular rock climbing area close to the holiday hotspot Malaga, Spain, which locals say has become a "theme-park for tourists".
It’s understood the woman was aged about 20 and was killed after falling around 500ft. Her body was recovered by emergency services after the alarm was raised shortly after 7pm yesterday.
The woman’s climbing pal, astonishingly escaped death by grabbing onto a bush-covered rock that was poking out as he fell alongside his buddy. He was in a state of shock when he was rescued, according to reports.
The tragic accident took place near El Chorro, a village close to the Camino de Rey pathway. The two climbers were in a spot called the Swiss Sector, next to a hiking area called the Arabic Staircase.
The two mountain climbers had been going at it all day, and it’s thought the accident occurred as they took the wrong route down the mountain.
The survivor, whose nationality is unknown, told police they had lost their balance and fell over the side of a ravine.
The Civil Guard have yet to make any official comment but is expected to do so over the course of the weekend.
It’s the second tragedy to happen in the area in less than a month which has involved a British climber.
On December 11, a man also believed to be around 20 fell and hurt himself in an area known as Puente de Mono, which is also close to El Chorro.
He was knocked unconscious and went into cardiac arrest before the first responders arrived.
The Brit, who hasn’t been named, was pronounced dead after the helicopter rescue.
Both incidents took place near the Caminito de Rey path, which was once considered the most dangerous walk in the world, after it fell into disuse before reopening following a restoration.
