As the 97th Academy Awards approach this weekend, a forgotten but iconic video from 16 years ago has resurfaced, reminding the internet of a moment that many had either never seen or completely forgotten about it.
One of the most memorable yet overlooked moments from The Oscars history dates back to 2009, when a tribute to the most popular musicals of the time featured Hollywood’s hottest on-screen and off-screen couples performing alongside one of the biggest musicians in the industry.
The 81st Academy Awards, held at the Kodak Theatre on 22nd February 2009, were hosted by Hugh Jackman who performed a dazzling medley of movie musicals performed by none other than Beyoncé, accompanied by Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper.
At the time, Amanda and Dominic were leading characters in Mamma Mia!, which had become the highest-grossing movie musical ever, while Zac and Vanessa's film series High School Musical was at the peak of its popularity, with its third and final film having recently been released. Bringing these two worlds together, along with the legendary Beyoncé, made quite the performance.
The medley included classic show tunes such as Top Hat, White Tie and Tails, alongside hits from High School Musical, Mamma Mia! and Hairspray. Now, 16 years later, the internet has rediscovered this hidden gem, with many people expressing their surprise at never having seen it before.
Fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their reactions. One user exclaimed, “Wait, I NEVER SAW THAT,” while another added, “Never saw this before until now lol wow Vanessa & Zac singing and collabing w/ the queen B?”
A third fan questioned, “What when?! Where was I?” while another wrote, “I had no idea this existed and it's so random and a huge pop culture moment.” A Disney fan even reminisced, “My little zanessa heart *thrived* when this happened lmao.”
For context, Zac and Vanessa dated for five years, from 2005 to 2010, while filming the Disney trilogy, High School Musical. Although the couple are no longer together, this nostalgic moment continues to hold a special place in the hearts of fans who grew up watching them.
Fast forward to today, and the excitement surrounding the Oscars remains as strong as ever.
