Beautiful UK seaside town has barely changed in 100 years

The British seaside is known for its nostalgic, quaint charm and evokes images of ninety-niners, rockpools and sipping tea in charming cafes. So, if you’re looking to see more of the UK’s stunning coastline it might be worth travelling to this one town that boasts Britain’s best high street.

Cornwall is known for its untouched natural beauty – which is why it attracts millions of visitors every year. It gets the best of the island’s weather, on top of laying claim to beautiful sandy beaches and ancient relics. However, despite its large tourism industry, this one town hasn’t lost its historic charm.

Cradled in Cornwall's southwest, St Ives has retained its medieval village feel. Recently, The Telegraph recognised St Ives' high street as being among the UK's finest, due to its distinct, cobbled lanes, charming whitewashed buildings, and delightful assortment of boutiques.

"Fore Street in St Ives, with its slate-hung shops and independent galleries, has changed little over the last century, offering a perfect mix of local and artistic charm," said the publication. The centre also offers plentiful charming pubs and renowned restaurants.

The town’s unique charm means that St Ives is also a great destination year-round. While it can become thronged over the warmer summer months, the colder seasons offer the chance to explore its lively pubs, highly-rated restaurants and immerse yourself in its rich history. An old fisherman’s wharf, legend tells it was founded by the Irish princess and martyr, St Ia, back in the 5th century. Since then it has been the stage for rebellions, captured Armada and Victorian-era tourism.

Plus, off-season also gives you the chance to explore the town’s surrounding quartet of beaches in relative peace. With its heather-clad cliffs that shear off into the Atlantic, and its rugged coast, there are few places else in the UK better suited to feel like the only person on earth.

The dramatic landscape also lends itself to storm-watching, which is perfect for winter and early spring, as you can stand on the clifftops and observe the dramatic crashing of the waves. (Before tucking yourself into the bed of your cosy guesthouse, of course).

St Ives is also a rich artistic hub. You can visit the town’s very own branch of the Tate Gallery, which has existed there since 1993 and which features contemporary art across three floors. Visitors can also explore Barbara Hepworth's Studio, which is home to the works of the renowned local artist and which can be found within a stunning sculpture garden.
