Arsenal and Man Utd stars brawl in FA Cup chaos after red card and penalty

Manchester United and Arsenal players brawled in a huge row following a controversial penalty and a red card in their FA Cup third round clash at the Emirates.

Ruben Amorim's visitors took the lead with a swift counter attack in the 52nd minute, which saw United captain Bruno Fernandes sweep the ball past David Raya after he was fed by Alejandro Garnacho. But 10 minutes later, Red Devils defender Diogo Dalot received a second yellow card and a red for a foolish sliding tackle on Mikel Merino.

Moments later, Arsenal equalised after another one of their trademark set pieces, United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir's weak punch landing at the feet of Gabriel, who scored via a deflection. And then things got really feisty.

Harry Maguire controversially conceded a penalty after bringing down Kai Havertz, who theatrically hit the ground after colliding with the defender's left arm. With no VAR in force to check the referee's decision, the spot kick was awarded.

The England star then sparked a brawl with Arsenal players, ranting at Havertz before other players joined in, with Manuel Ugarte and Kai Havertz being left on the floor. In the end, the anger simmered down and Maguire was booked for his part in the brawl, along with Gabriel.

United were eventually left off the hook as Bayindir saved Martin Odegaard's spot-kick. A tremendous stop saw the keeper at full stretch dive low down to his left to save from the Arsenal captain.

It left the score at 1-1. Alan Shearer, commentating for BBC Sport, praised the United keeper but said the penalty should not have been awarded. He said: "Altay Bayindir gets down really, really quickly. He gets a good strong hand to it. I thought the penalty was a bit harsh, I really did."

Turkish stopper Bayindir, a summer signing for United, was called into action again with another top save from Declan Rice, before the game went into extra time. Shearer noted: "Declan Rice should score, it's a complete free header. Wonderful save. It should be in the back of the net. Big, big opportunity. He should guide that across him and put more power behind it."

Earlier in the game, Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus went off injured on a stretcher in what could be a serious blow to Mikel Arteta's men and their Premier League title hopes. The in form attacker was seen clutching his knee in pain after an awkward fall.
