Anthony Gordon faces being banned for over a month after Newcastle red card

Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon is set to miss the next month of action after his crazy red card for pushing Brighton defender Paul van Hecke on Sunday.

Gordon was given an early bath in the 83rd minute of his side's FA Cup clash against the Seagulls, which the Magpies lost 2-1 in extra time, after shoving Van Hecke while chasing a ball in Brighton's defensive third.

The referee in charge opted to show Gordon a red after seeing he had pushed Van Hecke in the back of the head, which comes as a huge blow to Newcastle because he will now miss the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool on March 16.

It was a manic game at St James' Park as Brighton also went down to 10 men after Tariq Lamptey was shown a second yellow card eight minutes after Gordon.

Gordon has been superb for Newcastle this season, scoring nine times and assisting six goals to become a crucial part of Eddie Howe's dangerous attack.

But Howe will have to make do without Gordon for the foreseeable future, with a three-game ban incoming. That will mean he will miss a set of important games for Newcastle as they continue their push for European football.

Gordon is set to be suspended for Newcastle's trip to West Ham next Monday night before that crucial cup final against Liverpool at Wembley Stadium the following Sunday.

Newcastle are desperate to win their first major trophy since 1955 but now their already tough task against the Premier League leaders has just gotten much harder without Gordon's services.

The final game Gordon will miss will be after the international break - a home clash against Brentford - meaning Howe won't have him back available until Newcastle's trip to Leicester City on April 7.

It remains to be seen whether Gordon will be called up to Thomas Tuchel's first England squad when he names his group of players in the coming weeks.

Howe will be hopeful that Gordon is included for upcoming World Cup qualifying games against Albania and Latvia as it will keep the 24-year-old active and maintain his solid form this season.
