Anthony Gordon BANNED from Carabao Cup final as Newcastle star is sent off for lashing out at Brighton ace...

ANTHONY GORDON will be banned from the Carabao Cup final after lashing out at Brighton's Jan Paul van Hecke.

The Newcastle star tussled with the Seagulls defender after the whistle had gone during their FA Cup fifth round clash.

As the ball ran off the pitch, Van Hecke had a grasp of Gordon's shirt and the red mist descended.

The winger lost his cool, angrily striking the Dutchman around the head.

He was red carded by referee Anthony Taylor and Gordon will now serve a three-match ban for violent conduct.

It means he will be suspended for the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool on March 16.

Losing Gordon is a huge blow for Newcastle, who are looking to win their first piece of major silverware since 1955.

When the Toon lost the 2023 final to Manchester United, Gordon missed the game due to being cup tied after featuring for Everton in the competition before his £40million January move.

On missing out last time, he admitted: "I was devastated last time, I played in a stupid cup game just before I came to Newcastle.

“I had a broken hand, I just remember thinking 'why did I play in that game'?

"I travelled down [to Wembley], unfortunately, we lost but what an experience."

This ban will also see him miss the Premier League games either side of the trip to Wembley against West Ham and Brentford.

Just eight minutes after the England star was sent for an early bath, Brighton went down to ten-men as Tariq Lamptey picked up a second booking.

With the teams level at 1-1, Newcastle then thought they had won it from the resulting free-kick as Fabian Schar headed in.

But following a VAR check involving the new semi-automated offside technology, the goal was chalked off.

Brighton went on to win it in extra-time via a Danny Welbeck finish.
