The star was killed in a car crash following a performance in Alabama.
Her spokesperson confirmed the news to TMZ, revealing the accident happened on Saturday morning.
Further details surrounding the incident have not been shared.
The 63-year-old’s death is said to have ‘rocked and devastated’ family and friends.
The Sequence formed in 1979 in South Carolina, consisting of lead singer and rapper Stone, Cheryl Cook and Gwendolyn Chisolm.
Their most notable single was Funk You Up in 1979, which was later sampled by Dr Dre and Bruno Mars.
Stone also launched her own solo career in the late 1990s after six years as part of the band.
Her solo album Black Diamond was released in 1999 and included the single No More Rain (In This Cloud).
Following musical success, Stone ventured into acting and appeared in The Hot Chick and as Big Mama Morton in the Broadway musical Chicago.
Stone has been nominated for three Grammy awards and has won two Soul Train Lady of Soul awards.
She is survived by her son Michael, daughter Diamond, and two grandchildren.
