Amazon Prime Video has just added a rom-com inspired by a real Hollywood star's love life to its catalogue.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall, originally released in 2008, is now available for Prime subscribers to stream at no extra cost.
The film was penned by How I Met Your Mother star Jason Segel and marked the directorial debut of Nicholas Stoller (Bad Neighbours). The cast includes Segel himself, Kristen Bell, Paul Rudd, Russell Brand, and Mila Kunis.
The plot revolves around Peter (Segel), who heads to Hawaii to recover from his breakup with TV star Sarah Marshall (Bell). However, he discovers that Sarah is also holidaying on the island with her new celeb boyfriend Aldous Snow (Brand).
This unexpected reunion leads to awkward moments for Peter but ultimately helps him find closure. Interestingly, this comedy is based on Segel's own experiences.
He confessed that the film was inspired by his own breakups and that the opening scene happened 'exactly as it was portrayed.' In this scene, Peter is completely naked, waiting for his girlfriend to come home.
She walks in, announces she wants to break up, and leaves him standing there in the buff, reports Surrey Live.
At a 2015 Harvard Book Store event, Jason Segel revealed the real story behind the brutal segment. He confessed: "The opening scene of the movie, the breakup scene, that happened to me exactly as it was portrayed in the movie."
Elaborating on the painful real-life inspiration, he added: "A woman I was dating was out of town, and she came back and called me up and said, 'We need to talk.'"
Segel admitted his naivety and continued: "I thought that meant something different than what that meant, apparently. So I was waiting, and she walked through the door, and I was like how I am in the movie [undressed]. And this breakup happened."
While the actor hinted that the character of Sarah Marshall represents an array of past romantic interests, fans speculate that Linda Cardellini, Segel's former flame from Freaks and Geeks, is the muse behind much of the film.
Upon its premiere, the movie resonated deeply with audiences, prompting effusive praise by Rotten Tomatoes users, such as one declaring, "One of the best rom-coms of recent memory that is equally sweet as it is gut-bustingly funny."
Another fan gushed: "Just hilarious, a comedy classic, with the perfect mix of sharp dialogue, great acting, terrific characters effective physical comedy and just enough moments of genuine sympathy for the poor jilted main character Peter."
In another glowing endorsement, a third viewer conceded: "I'm not a rom-com kinda person, but this film found a great balance between dumb, raunchy, heartfelt, and hilarious to make it quite enjoyable."
One cinema enthusiast described the drama on IMDB as "an amusing and sometimes awkward breakup film."
